The Importance of Hydration

What does water do in our body?

1.      Overall health!

2.      Regulates body temperature

3.      Skin health, get that hydrated glow!

4.      Makes sure organs function properly

5.      Reduces hunger

6.      Helps with weight loss and weight maintenance

7.      Improves sleep and mood

8.      Improves brain performance

9.      Lubricates joints

 

How much water should you drink each day?

If you are feeling thirsty you are already mildly dehydrated so it is important to drink water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

 

Is it 8 glasses of water a day?

We have all heard this before… but the answer is NO, most adults need MORE than that.

 

So how much do you need?

-        About 11 cups a day for men

-        About 9 cups a day for women

-        You will need more if you exercise or are in a hot climate

 

How do you know if you are hydrated?

Check your urine! You want to see a pale yellow color.

Tips for staying hydrated:

1.      Sip water throughout the day

2.      Drink ½ of your water for the day by lunch time

3.      Drink a glass of water before each meal

4.      Eat foods high in water: fruits and vegetables, broth based soups

5.      Carry a water bottle and leave one on your desk at work

6.      Use flavor enhancers: Fruit or Cucumber

7.      Drink water first thing in the morning!
